The arithmetic that never changes
Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is not a way to earn a living and it is not a solution to a financial problem.
The maths runs against you on every slot and every roulette wheel, permanently and without exception. A DGOJ licence and certified games do not change that. They only ensure the rules are transparent and enforced.
The one reliable way to handle it is to stake only money you can afford to lose — and to decide in advance how much that is.
What Spanish law guarantees you
Every DGOJ-licensed operator is required to give you these tools. They are not a courtesy, they are regulation:
Deposit limits
Daily, weekly and monthly caps that you set yourself.
The mechanism that matters: lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one does not. Increases trigger a cooling-off period and additional checks. The system is deliberately built so that a decision made in the heat of the moment cannot take effect straight away.
Use that in your favour: set your limits when you register and are thinking calmly about your budget, not later.
Reality checks
Periodic on-screen prompts showing how long you have played and where the session stands. Turn them on. Losing track of time while gambling is real and measurable, and the prompt breaks it.
Time-outs
A temporary block at a single operator, from a few days to several months. It is the low-threshold option when you sense something is slipping but do not want a permanent closure yet.
Self-exclusion through the RGIAJ
The RGIAJ (Registro General de Interdicciones de Acceso al Juego) is Spain’s national self-exclusion register. Registering blocks you at every licensed operator at once, not just one. You can do it online or in person, and it is free.
It is the most effective tool available.
From 2027: limits that add up across operators
Royal Decree 520/2026 introduces deposit caps that apply across all operators combined: 700 € per day, 1,750 € per week and 3,300 € per four weeks, centrally managed. It is expected to start around March 2027.
Until then, one limitation is worth keeping in mind: limits work operator by operator. Anyone with three accounts has effectively tripled their own cap. If you are going to work with limits, work with one account.
Two things British and Irish players get wrong
GAMSTOP does not cover Spanish operators
This is the single most important paragraph on this page for a UK reader.
GAMSTOP blocks you at operators licensed by the Great Britain Gambling Commission. A Spanish-licensed site holds a DGOJ licence, not a British one — so it sits entirely outside GAMSTOP’s reach. Registering with GAMSTOP does not stop you opening an account here.

The British safeguards you are used to do not apply
UK regulation has made a number of decisions on your behalf over the years — among them the ban on funding gambling with a credit card, introduced in 2020.
Spain draws its lines differently: credit card restrictions here apply to certain groups of players, not as a blanket ban. Nor is there a British-style stake cap.
That cuts both ways. Where UK rules decided for you, in Spain you decide — which means the limits are only as good as the ones you set on day one.
Setting a limit, step by step
The tools are useless if you cannot find them. The route is essentially the same at every licensed operator:
- Open the responsible gambling section of your account. It is usually in the account menu, not in general settings. In Spanish it is signposted as Juego responsable.
- Choose the deposit limit and set it separately for day, week and month. Set all three, not just one.
- Confirm. If you are lowering a limit, it applies at once.
- Switch on the reality check, ideally at 30 or 60 minute intervals.
- Take a screenshot. It sounds trivial, but later it reminds you what you had decided.
A practical note on the figure: take the monthly budget you have in mind and set the limit below it. Correcting upwards is deliberately awkward; correcting downwards you can do whenever you like.
What the operator is obliged to do
Player protection in Spain is not solely your job. Licensed operators carry their own duties, and it is worth knowing them because you can hold them to it:
- Verifying your identity against official registers before any withdrawal is possible. That is why you cannot play without an NIE or DNI, and why minors cannot stay undetected for long.
- Checking the RGIAJ. Anyone on the national register may not open an account or receive marketing.
- No advertising to self-excluded people — a duty that binds sites like this one too.
- Giving you access to your own play history, so you can review stakes and losses. Use it; memory misleads in both directions.
- Credit card restrictions for certain groups of players.
If an operator breaches any of these duties, the competent authority is the DGOJ. With an operator holding no Spanish licence, that authority would simply not exist. That is the real difference.
Warning signs
No checklist replaces professional advice, but these patterns are well documented. If several look familiar, that is reason enough to talk to someone:
- You play longer or for higher stakes than you intended.
- You try to win back losses — “just until I am back to even”.
- You hide your gambling from your partner, family or friends.
- You stake money you need for rent, bills or living costs.
- You borrow money to gamble, or sell things to fund it.
- You feel restless or irritable when you cannot play.
- Gambling is your response to stress, loneliness or low mood.
- You have raised your limits more than once.
The last one is the most measurable. If you have raised a limit more than once, that is a signal — and it is precisely what the cooling-off period exists for.
Three expensive mistakes in reasoning
Most losses come not from bad luck but from assumptions that are simply wrong. These three are the most stubborn:
“After that many losing spins, one must be due”
A random number generator has no memory. Every spin is independent of the last: the twentieth losing spin changes the probability of the twenty-first by exactly nothing. Roulette works the same way — after ten reds, black is no more likely than it was before.
This error is so common it has its own name, and it is the most frequent reason people raise their stakes.
“The slot returns 96 %, so I only lose 4 %”
RTP is a theoretical figure calculated over millions of rounds, not your personal balance. It describes what the machine keeps in the long run, not what you take home tonight.
In practice it means the opposite of what it sounds like: the longer you play, the more reliably your result converges on the house edge. A certified return rate is a consumer safeguard, not a promise of profit.
“A system, or more experience, will improve my odds”
On slots and roulette there is no skill that alters the house edge. Doubling strategies only change when the loss arrives: they turn many small wins into one very large loss, bounded by the table limit and your balance.
If someone is selling you a system, they earn from the system, not from the game.

Because you live in Spain and your account is held by a Spanish operator, the Spanish services are the ones that can actually act on your behalf:

A practical warning about calling home: UK and Irish freephone numbers generally cannot be dialled from abroad, so the National Gambling Helpline is usually unreachable from a Spanish line. The routes that do work from Spain are online support — GamCare offers help in English over the internet — and your local GP in Spain, who can refer you on and arrange an interpreter.
If you are worried about someone else
FEJAR’s member associations explicitly advise family members. You do not have to wait for the person concerned to ask for help themselves, and you can get advice without them knowing.
One practical note: arguing about specific sums almost never works. What tends to help is talking about the behaviour and its consequences — and getting support for yourself as well.
Protecting minors
Gambling in Spain is strictly 18+, without exception. Every licensed operator verifies identity against official registers before a withdrawal is possible.
If children or teenagers have access to your devices, install parental control software as well, and do not share accounts or payment methods.

Can I block myself at every Spanish casino at once? Yes. Registering with the national RGIAJ register takes effect simultaneously at every licensed operator.
